Travel Tips You May Not Know…

Hello everyone!

Over the last 6 months, I’ve become a bit of a master traveller in the short term category. I guess a master commuter is a better term? Traveller sounds more catchy haha!

I wanted to share some tips and tricks I’ve learned while commuting every week the last 6 months. It feels crazy to say I’ve been in school for 6 months which means I’m halfway through my course! 😮

We are just starting makeup for Film and Television and it’s been an absolute blast so far. We learned how to stipple on beards and I realized how much I do look like my brother. 😂

On to my first tip, and for me it’s a huge one because I CANNOT travel without music or I will go insane.

1) Set a reminder/alarm on your phone or device to charge your iPod/iPhone and pack your headphones ahead of time. Usually, if I know I’m going to be running out the door in a hurry I will do this just in case. I always set it for a good amount of time before I leave, usually in the morning or early noon. There’s nothing worse than getting out the door with no headphones or having 2% battery on your phone. (Also if you were super adamant on not forgetting your headphones, have a spare pair that never leaves your purse) I also charge my portable battery at the same time as my phone as a backup. I just have a cheap Duracell one but it works in a pinch!

2) Bring water and Snacks.  This is another thing to pack ahead of time. Every time I’ve thought ‘No it’s too heavy I’m not bringing snacks’, I’ve regretted it so fast because there I am, stomach rumbling on the bus or ferry. My favourite quick snacks are nuts, granola bars, and some chocolate. Basically, things that won’t squish easy and provide quick energy.

3) Plan ahead the best spot for your bus/train fare. I travel to Vancouver every week as some of you may know and the transit system is pretty awesome. (I know some will say different but for a small town gal like me it’s really good) We use Compass Cards, and I hate that last minute feeling of racing to the bus and racing to find my card.

4) Go for the stylish AND comfortable travel bag. I used to make rather inconvenient travel bag choices until I invested in my dream backpack. Its equal parts comfortable to wear has SO many pockets and is super fashionable. I got mine from Forever 21 (no shock there hehe) and its been all over B.C and to L.A so it’s definitely held up!

5) Invest in some handy Apps… It doesn’t take any money at all to have super handy apps on your phone. The #1 app I use is the Bus Tracker app. I think every city probably has its own version. I hate running to the bus stop only to figure out I missed it and the next one is 15 mins away. Basically, this app tells you which buses go to that stop and exactly when the bus will be there and even when the next 3 will arrive.

6) Last but not least… Investing in a couple gadgets can go a long way. For me my favourite gadget is my phone clip. I hate holding my phone for fear that someone could snatch it easy, but if it’s away I can’t, well, use it. That’s when I realized Otterbox gave me a phone clip with my case. I’ve been using it ever since and it’s changed my transit routine. I clip it to my waistline and I can have my hands free and tuck my shirt over to hide it if I need to. It makes listening to music while I walk so much more enjoyable! The other is a simple lanyard or extendable strap for your transit card (my friend from school inspired this one ☝️) Another amazing way to keep your hands free and your transit card safe and secure.

I hope this tips have been handy for you! I felt the need to share my knowledge 😂

The Perfect No Makeup, Makeup Look ft. MAC and NYX Cosmetics

I wanted to share my personal , perfect no makeup makeup look today. I really love it because it doesn’t use a billion products but just enough to cover all your bases.

I wanted to use beautiful neutral colours and the first thing that came to mind was my quad from MAC that contains Taupe, Espresso and a white and black (which names I’ve forgotten 😂)

The stars of the look are definitely my Rimmel Match Perfection (as always) and my favourite affordable powder from NYX the Stay Matte Powder Foundation. Besides my primer this is the base especially on my good skin days it’s all I like to use.

The biggest reason I love my MAC quad is the multi use I get out of it. The taupe shade is all I wear in my brows (with a tad espresso mixed in) and then I can make a natural eye look, and even more dramatic looks like a smokey eye.

Eyes: MAC Espresso and Taupe

Brows: MAC Taupe

Lips: MAC lipstick in Myth

Face: Rimmel Match Perfection and NYX Stay Matte But Not Flat Powder Foundation

Lashes: Rimmel Total Tease Mascara

Do you have any favourite no makeup, makeup products??

Giving My Least Favourite Makeup Another Chance…

Hello loves!

I was recently thinking about the plethora of makeup I own and began to ponder about how much of it I have actually used. (I know dangerous territory haha) I specifically remembered how excited I was when I bought the Urban Decay Gwen Stefani palette in Los Angeles last year, and the immediate let down I felt when I first tried it. I basically used it twice (maybe) and then put it to rest in the back of my makeup drawer. When I started school in March I put it in my kit in hopes it would get used. It did here and there but not until TODAY have I given it a second chance on my own face.

I created a fun look using the brown and red shades in the palette and I’m not afraid to say I’m loving it… the look that is.

I am still on the fence about a few shades in the palette (specifically the chunky/glittery shades)  but quite a few of them have redeemed them self.

The lighter shades like Stark and Skimp are lovely base and highlight shades. They’re indeed very soft and create a great base for other shadows and the taupe shades like Zone and Anaheim go great in the crease and don’t shift in colour once applied.

Now we move to where I had some trouble…

I tried to add Punk into the crease and things got a little sticky. That shade does not blend well at all. It goes on and stays exactly where you put it. The pigment in the darker colours is almost too much to work with (dare I say something can be too pigmented?). I could feel the yucky disappointment creeping in again but I fought it and spent a few extra seconds (minutes… hours who knows lol)  blending it out. I realized that its insane pigmentation could work better perhaps as a liner than a shadow, and I was right!

I used Steady as my shimmer shade and I was pleasantly surprised by its creamy consistency. My faith had been slightly restored, to say the least! The shade is beautiful while still being subtle.

All in all, I am happier this time around with the palette than a year ago. I can say that I really like about 75% of the colours and consistency of the palette. 😛

Did you like this second chance kind of blog posts where I bring back an ‘oldie’ and give it another try? I feel like I get caught up in needing to have the newest and best makeup and forget about just having fun and being creative with my writing.

Anyhoo I’d love to hear some feedback!

Copper Gold Eye Look ☀️🥂

Hello everyone! Happy August to you! ☀️

I know it’s been a while since I posted. School kept me crazy busy with my Airbrushing final project and basically every waking moment I had was spent painting, or planning it. 😅

But I’m back! And ready for a fun post! I recently did a very summer themed makeup look and I really wanted to share it! It’s one of my favourite looks even for Fall because it uses lots of copper and gold eyeshadows. 😊 (not that I’m thinking about fall yet)

Life Changes and Becoming a Makeup Artist 👩‍🎨

Hello loves!

I know I’ve been radio silent for the last few weeks (more than a month yikes) but I promise I have a very great reason why!

If the title didn’t give it away I’ve been going to school to become a makeup artist! My course is one year long, and is and jam packed with knowledge ranging from beauty and bridal to special fx and gore. I won’t mention which school but I’ll give you a hint… it’s the top Makeup School in all of Canada 🙈❤️ Okay, it’s Blanche Macdonald! (Eek! 🎉)

Here’s a little snap from first days set up! The fun thing is as you learn your own rhythm of working, this set up can change, though mine is still very similar to this 😛

I’ve been eating up every second of it and every week is a new adventure for me. My confidence grows every day and I’ve learned to just go for it and try new things every day!

Along with that I’ve been learning a lot of new lessons in life, how to deal with all sorts of people, and conquering my anxiety one day at a time. I won’t talk too much about the negative but I’ll touch down on some of the more fun trivial things I’ve leaned.

1) Invest in your skincare. This seems a bit weird to be my top tip, but just as we wear our heart on our sleeve we tend to wear our stress on our face. Whether it’s from being exposed to harsh environments in the city or stressing over a test it’s important to help ease your skin along with your emotions. Also having makeup put on and then taken off, (sometimes on again) really takes a toll on the skin 😮 I feel like every week I get one blemish gone and another pops up right after it. Thankfully my ew goodies have mostly kept it at bay.

These are a few goodies I decided to invest in. Ultrabland cleanser is a wonderfully light oil based cleanser that really lifts the dirt and leftover makeup so easily from your face. After that I use their toner (not pictured) called Eau Roma water, and spritz all over my face. Then I wipe everything off with a cotton pad or two, and boy does that get the impurities off of your face. I sometimes do a final spritz just to really soak in the skin. Eau Roma Water is a hydrating toner (no alcohol in it) so you can even spritz yourself through the day to freshen up! Then I was on a roll and returned some Lush containers and received a free face mask called ‘Oatfix‘. I chose that one specifically for sensitive skin that needed some help. 😊 I am so lucky that where I’m staying I have a Lush only a 10 min walk away! It’s such a treat!

2) Take time for yourself, anxiety can always catch up with you. I’m sure I’m not the first person whose experienced anxiety in some form and thought ‘I was doing so good why is this happening?’. Usually I say let the good times roll, but it’s important to leave time for yourself and having some bliss. This for me has meant unplugging from social media for a while and working on myself. I was so proud that I had ‘conquered 3 weeks at school with feeling no stress or anxiety’. Well that caught up to me in a big way and I’ll just say it’s taken me a week and a half to get back to feeling relatively normal. It’s hard to do things like blogging and other creative outlets that you pour yourself into when you feel yourself being unhinged. I feel tempted to write myself a letter for the future if this ever happens again and reassure myself I can get through it no matter how excruciating and impossible it seems. It’s so hard to imagine the good when you’re surrounded by negative thoughts and feelings in your head.

Anyway, this is the quote from my planner this week and I think it’s wonderfully accurate.

3) Not everything is as it seems. This is mostly for myself. Starting my program, (and even now still) I thought my skill set was ok, but I was there to learn and that was that. I love makeup so I felt a tremendous amount of pressure to do great, but I also walked in believing I wouldn’t do as good as others because my skills were not as exercised. It seems I am doing quite well in the course and this is more of a high five to myself, not bragging in any way. There were numerous makeup applications and techniques that I immediately wrote myself off as ‘doomed to fail’ and then I applied them really well! I was convinced I couldn’t do it yet there I was doing it! This months celebration was applying false lashes. I’ve never done it, there I said it. Really only once to myself but never to anyone else. I am a falsie rookie all the way. As I anxiously held the strip lash in my tweezers I had ‘you’re going to mess up’ bouncing around in my head as well as ‘please god don’t let this end up in her eyebrow somehow’. I went in, did my best, and by some miracle applied it perfectly. That small (but powerful) voice in my head was cheering in the background, knowing I could do it all along. Don’t doubt yourself before you’ve even tried.

On a positive note I’ve been reading more since going to school. It feels like reading is more relaxing now where I used to think that watching YouTube was. But now if I watch videos I tend to fall asleep haha. So my favourite book as of the moment is ‘The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time’.

I won’t go into detail but the perspective of this book is so incredibly different and refreshing I cannot get enough of it. The narrative is charming, real, and funny.

Also I’ve been giving myself little treats for my ‘accomplishments’, just like sweets and whatnot (sounds so silly but it works) And the first week I was hugely spoiled with cinnamon buns from my Aunty. They were delightful. 😋

Anyhoo, It’s been an absolute roller coaster to say the least but I feel myself getting used to my new routine, and my confidence is growing strong every day. I’ve started running again and it feels amazing and relieves so much anxiety I forgot how much I love it and need to to it. My favourite thing to do is to run down and along the beach (when it’s not raining haha)

Spring has definitely sprung despite the rain clouds moving in in the last few days!

You’ll have to forgive me for how absent I’ve been, it’s even taken me multiple times just to write this one post 😂 between school, homework, work, family and relationships there’s not a huge amount of downtime sometimes. I’m very much looking forward to the next few days as it is Easter and all the family is up and I am home!

Have a lovely day!~M
