Makeup for a Hot Summer Day… ☀️ How to Make It Last 💄✌️

I’ve been trying to think of a much shorter, more intriguing title than this but I’m coming up blank for now 😅

We’ve had our first heat wave in Vancouver, and I’m trying not to complain about it since we just survived our usual 7 months of winter.

My favourite part of summer is that everything seems so much more special. Any night of the week becomes a good night to grab a gelato on the pier, and the only reason is because of the beautiful weather. We all celebrate it!

Well… most of us. The select few of us makeup lovers may see it as a very hot, melty time not to be celebrated. I personally love getting dolled up to go out but the heat admittedly can get in the way.

So I thought I’d share my favourite ‘heatproof’ makeup and tips with you today! This is what I’ve been wearing the last week and a half and it’s perfect to wear casually or spruce it up a bit for an evening out. 🥂 (I don’t know why I use this emoji so much because I never drink haha, it just looks like a cute/fun emoji 😝)

I love dewy foundations and my two favourites to use are the Nars Sheer Glow and the Clinique Moisture Surge (SPF 15). I do think it is important to find a foundation with a good SPF, and to find a formula that works for you. A lot of the time when Sunscreen is added to foundation it tends to change it. I found the Clinique to be my personal perfect fit. Sometimes it just takes a bit of searching! Keeping our skin protected from the sun is so important! Clinique has a light to medium coverage and Nars has medium to full coverage being very buildable.

When it comes to Summer, I find sheer coverage to be more comfortable on the skin. I’m not looking for major coverage because I find that my skin becomes much more healthy in the warm weather. Do you guys have that happen too?

Like I said the key is to keep it light. To me, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. The more you put on, means more product to potentially cake up. (I’m not saying that full face coverage is bad, this is just what works for me personally :p)

Only conceal areas that really need it, and set everything with a light loose setting powder right away. To me having a loose setting powder is the most important tip. Compact powders tend to be full of fillers (that’s how they stick together in the pan) and that filler gunk is what makes makeup look cakey. My favourite cheapy loose powder is the e.l.f High Definition Undereye setting powder, but I use it all over my face too. It’s mostly matte, but there’s a tiny bit of glitter they snuck in there that is barely noticeable.

I like my concealer to also act as a highlighter, hence why I adore the Match Perfection Concealer from Rimmel. It has a light consistency but is very pigmented, which makes it look so flawless under the eye while still being so thin. I don’t know what they do with the formula but I keep re-buying it!

Along with an undereye highlight, I take this opportunity to use a highlight all over my face (it almost acts as an extra setting powder). For this, I love the e.l.f baked highlighters. They aren’t too intense so you can apply them all over and they look spectacular.

For the bronzer/contour, a simple matte bronzer does the trick. I like to use a matte bronzer for a look like this so it doesn’t look too ‘busy’ on the face. My favourite right now is from Ciaté and its the Bamboo Bronzer.

For hot days I avoid any undereye liner or anything that might smudge at the *literal* blink of an eye.

It might sound crazy, but all I wear on my eyes is either a little bit of the same bronzer I am wearing or a bit of the highlight. It looks natural and pleasing to the eye, especially for a natural look like this. I won’t blab on about the mascara, it’s just my favourite mascara. 😛

Now the lips are a different story. In fact, they’re the total opposite. I keep them matte, budge-proof and smudge proof. There’s nothing worse than trying to sip on your favourite iced delicacy and having to put your mouth on that weird ring of lipstick that we get on the straw. Nope, not today. I want that cupids bow staying where it needs to be and not melting off.

It’s a no-brainer that the Colourpop liquid lipsticks are my go-to lipstick for these days. They don’t budge (unlike their disappearing label haha) and they aren’t heavily drying on the lips. My fave right now is Bumble. 💋

My last items are not related to makeup at all but help with the scorching heat. I keep a small perfume rollerball in my purse just for extra freshening up. I always like to have a perfume on hand just in case, especially now that the busses are getting hotter. Right now my favourite has been Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker. I think the reason I love it so much is because I wore it to Los Angeles last summer and now it always reminds me of that trip!

Lastly, a cool pair of shades are always the finishing touch. Believe it or not, these came from the dollar store and I’m not afraid to admit it!

The weather keeps getting nicer, and I keep getting happier!

The Ordinary Skincare Brand Review

Hello loves!

Today I wanted to chat about a new skin care purchase of mine.

Since I’ve been going to school I’ve been exposed to so many new products and beauty brands. Along with that, I am so lucky to be surrounded by very knowledgeable people in terms of makeup, skincare and beauty in general.

The one brand that stood out as a winner for everyone was The Ordinary. I had never tried them before or even heard of them. My first assumption was that it must cost a pretty penny if it works that well for everybody and can be found in beauty boutiques. That’s where I was wrong! It is by far one of the most affordable skin care lines I’ve seen. I bought these 2 items without breaking the bank.

The item I wanted most was the Caffeine Solution. It was raved about as a holy grail for everyone so I had to see what the hype was all about. Basically how it works is: the caffeine stimulates the blood flow under your eyes reducing the darkness, and reducing any puffiness. Quite genius when you think about it, it’s like an extra shot of espresso for your under eyes. Rise and shine! ☀️

The other serum that I bought is called ‘Buffet’. The name really explains it all as it is a buffet of amazing ingredients. It’s an anti-aging serum that contains Peptides, Probiotics, Amino Acids, the list goes on! While I am still young and not needing to worry about anti-aging products yet, it also helps with many other things like the elasticity in your skin. It is a deep moisturizer containing Hyaluronic Acid, and also helps with the overall texture of your skin.

So, now we get to the really good stuff. I’ve been using it for roughly a week and a half. At first I wondered how quickly I’d see any results (if any). It’s hard when you see yourself every day, so you don’t always notice a difference. I started to notice my usual hormonal breakouts were not as bad, and the blemishes disappeared quicker. Once you apply it, you can feel it work all day/ all night. It sinks deep into the skin instead of sitting on top, or disappearing like other serums do.

The caffeine solution has done as promised and so far my under-eyes look a whole lot healthier and brighter. When allergy season hits I often get itchy swollen eyes. I have been noticing that the caffeine solutions helps reduce the swelling, and has slowly diminished the dark circles. Not only is that great for my self confidence, but it’s made wearing my contacts more comfortable which is an odd discovery!

I apply moisturizer after letting the solution sink in and it feels amazing. I read some reviews of people saying it dried out their under eye, but I haven’t found it to do that at all. I think because I do apply my moisturizers after the serum, it might help. 🤷🏼‍♀️😁

I was also intrigued by the style of packaging they come in. The glass dropper makes it easy to apply and the glass tip is very cold and soothing when I apply it under my eye. I’m not sure if that’s the intended purpose but that’s how I’m enjoying it. 😂

Each bottle contains a whopping 30 ml, and a little goes a very long way. In terms of price, product quality, and packaging this line of skin care is a winner.

The Caffeine Solution retails at $6.70 CAD, and Buffet at $14.80 CAD.

I would love to know if anyone else has heard of this brand? I have to credit my lovely classmates for telling me about this brand! ❤️ you ladies are a rad bunch. 😘

Hope everyone is having a fabulous Saturday! 💋

OOTD’s with the Summer Sun Collection by Warby Parker

Hello loves!

Summer is upon us, and so is the excitement and anticipation for a new season of style! I don’t know about you but by mid-march, I am already scoping out what is going to be in style this season, and what classic looks will be making a comeback.

Part of my anticipation for the season is always indulging in a new pair of sunglasses or two…or three. Who am I kidding, at one point I almost had a pair for every outfit in my wardrobe! Sunglasses are a staple of summertime and can truly take a look from zero to hero. They are a character-defining staple for an outfit. When you think of Tom Cruise in Top Gun you don’t just imagine plain old Tom Cruise, you imagine him in that sexy pair of Aviators. When you think of Audry Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s I can guarantee you imagine Aubry with her pair of Manhattan’s perfectly balanced on her nose.

What I’m saying is: you can’t be ready for summer without sunglasses, which is why I was so excited when Warby Parker reached out to me and asked me to check out their new Summer Sun Collection. Along with the Summer Sun Collection, you can also check out their full fabulous range HERE

The Summer Sun Collection is a wonderful mix of fun, colourful frames that are still flexible to your everyday lifestyle. I love how classic all the frames are, they truly last the test of time.

On a side note, they also offer prescription lenses in just as many high quality and fabulous styles. This makes me very happy since I wear prescription glasses/sunglasses and finding a drool-worthy pair is always a jackpot.

As I drooled over the amazing frames, I was inspired to pair them with some of my favourite summer looks.

They really do have a pair to match any outfit or style with their Summer Sun Collection. It has a perfect mix of polished, classy frames, as well as more eccentric, bright ones.

My first look is my take on the restyled, classic trend: The Canadian Tuxedo. Denim on top and denim on the bottom. As it is a classic style, it should only be paired with the perfect pair of classic sunglasses: Elle or Jones.

Both of these frames drew me in from the start. Both black and tortoiseshell are great to pair with any outfit. Dress them up, or dress them down, you will be on trend no matter what.

I wore my favourite 80’s style jean shirt from Forever 21, and paired it with my vintage torn jeans from Hollister.

My next look is a popular trend for the festival season, or casual fun day out. By pairing fun bright patterns with fun bright frames, you will feel unstoppable from dusk til dawn in Flynn.

This particular frame is definitely one of my top picks. The blue tint on Flynn caught my eye right away and makes it the perfect accessory for a fun summer outfit. The pink frame is also my top pick simply because this girl loves pink! 😛

I paired my favourite Rose Kimono from Forever 21 with black cut off shorts. Since the Kimono is such a big piece, I keep whatever is underneath it simple so it doesn’t get too ‘busy’ looking and still compliments my sunglasses. I decided to wear a simple white T-shirt from H&M paired with my favourite pink cap from Forever 21. My cut-offs are a pair of Guess jeans that got the chop and I ironed on a happy little robot patch to add some character.

Last but not least, for those warm summer evenings filled with laughter and *hopefully* delicious food and drinks.🥂 The perfect elegant night out must be paired with the ever so elegant Haskell or Aubrey.

I love dresses that can be worn casually or easily dressed up. This little black dress from Forever 21 is my go-to. It has a flattering cut and being black it easily goes with anything. I paired this with my silver and black gladiator sandals. A little pop or chrome or colour goes a long way with a black dress. Overtop I have worn my Material Girl dress shirt for when it gets a tad chillier in the evening.

Both these sunglasses are a perfect pair because of their versatile frames. They easily switch from casual day to evening ready glam just like that.

These are my 3 favourite outfits for summer so far!

Thanks to Warby Parker for inspiring such a fun post! ☀️😎🏖

Let me know what your favourite sunglasses are from the collection! 😊

To be honest, it was very hard to pick my favourite pairs because I enjoy every one of the styles from the new collection.

Hope you all have been enjoying your May so far! And thanks for stopping by and reading!

Tips for a more organized lifestyle.

Hello everyone!

For me to write this post, it actually feels a bit funny and momentous. I have not always been an organized person. In fact when I was in high school, and even a couple of years after I was probably the last person who would know anything about being organized. It has been a long time since then, and I have learned A LOT. In general, from growing up and having responsibilities thrust upon us, and my desire to learn and better myself, I’ve managed to have an organized lifestyle that I feel comfortable with.

For me, it is a perfect balance of focus and relaxation. It has taken a long time to realize that you can’t have control over everything, and nothing will be %100 perfect. Once you get past that you will feel better. Some people are just ‘better’ at certain things and we all have to form our own habits based on what we know we carry out easily, and what might take a bit more time.

My first tip is what I call:

Brain Bribery.

For example, I absolutely hate making my bed. I love having clean sheets and it all beautifully made, but I just hate having to put the duvet cover on,  put the sheets on the bed etc….

it sounds so small and petty but it’s true to my core. 😂

One habit I have started to make myself take on is that I can’t go on the internet until I get my bed done. Once those sheets are ready and dried there is no going on my phone or laptop until it’s all done from top to bottom. It’s a small thing but once I plant the idea in my head, it reinforces it to make it stronger. Then when it’s done I let myself watch whatever it is that I’ve been wanting to watch all day (usually a Zoella vlog hehe) and maybe enjoy a cup of tea. It’s that moment that I can enjoy those little accomplishments, and have my reward for doing my task first.

Secondly:

Enjoy your Organizing.

That sounds like such an odd thing when I write it down, but in reality, it’s true. I used to hate doing any kind of organizing in my life because I felt like nothing had a place. Then I looked at different shops for materials that made organizing easier, and more fun. It doesn’t cost much to do it, simple things like file folders, wire baskets and hangers are quite cheap and easy to come by. I love looking at Indigo, Canadian Tire (it’s like Walmart), and especially the dollar store. They always have fun and affordable trinkets. Another one of my favourites places is the thrift store. I also have a love for vintage items and you can find so many cool trunks and boxes from there. This goes especially for people living in small spaces. Space-saving items will be a lifesaver too, so invest in a hollow ottoman. I have 2 and I store my winter clothes and random seasonal items in there.

Next is:

It’s better to do a little than nothing at all.

I used to think ‘Oh, I don’t have enough time to clean my whole room so I won’t do it at all’. Then my room would sit for days looking like a hurricane struck more and more. That was not a good mindset at all. I started to just do one little thing every time the opportunity arose. I could throw those dirty clothes in my laundry hamper before running out to work, or take my garbage out while running out the door. Like I always say: small steps can climb mountains.

These are just some of my own tips and habits I’ve curated. By no means am I perfect though, my room still looks like a disaster sometimes and I’m very guilty of leaving things last-minute. It’s also important not to get stressed out if things don’t stay perfect.

So my last tip is:

‘Just chill’. It’s good to have a structure with your habits but it’s not worth the stress if you really can’t get something done. Sometimes life hits its peak busy level and things will get put to the side. Then, you will find a quiet day to just plug away at whatever it is you’ve needed to get done all week. There will always be spare time, sometimes we just can’t fathom it in the hectic swirl that is life.

I hope this has helped you in any way or maybe brought a smile to your face!

Anyhoo, thanks for stopping by! ❤️

Weird Beauty Habits that are actually Good?

Weird title huh?

I am starting to realize that we all have our own quirky habits that we may not share on a regular basis due to their strangeness, eccentrics or yadda yadda yadda. I want to break that stereotype and share some of my weird, wacky, and maybe even helpful habits. There’s nothing better than finding a cool ‘hack’ in my opinion. As a beauty community, I think it’s important to show we are all wonderfully different and that is what makes it a great community.

So I’m going to kick off with my biggest habit that actually turns out….is good for you?

1) Not washing my face in the morning. I know what you’re thinking, it sounds so gross, but hear me out before you make any further judgement. I will use a cleansing wipe to freshen up or warm wet cloth to ‘wash’ it but that is all. Then I apply moisturizer and serum etc. I know we all believe that we must wash day and night but really what are we ‘washing off’ in the morning? If you cleanse your face thoroughly at night and all that, what are we washing off in the morning that is so bad? The answer is nothing. We are not exposed to any dirt or bacteria, and typically we don’t sweat so what’s the point? (Of course, if you’re sick or do sweat that is a different story). Night time is when our skin actually repairs its self after the day of abuse from sun, makeup, and being around bacteria. It needs that time to literally rebalance its mojo. The reason we use moisturizer before bed is that we strip our natural oils with the dirt when we wash our face, hence why replenishing is important at night. So don’t freak out if you miss a morning wash, or really don’t want to get up and do your regime. It might actually be good for you. Take it easy on your skin in the morning, it’s just woken up too ;P

2) Applying Moisturizer with a brush. So this might be more of a preference than a benefit. I just hate touching my face. It’s a weird habit I know (hence the title). I constantly worry about bacteria especially when I have acne so this seemed like a possible solution. I started using a soft synthetic stippling brush to apply my moisturizer and serum. I am way more happy to do my skincare routine at night, thus improves my quality of care. It is important that we like our skincare routine and if it needs a re-vamp once in a while that is ok! I was reluctant to do mine because I dislike touching my face, so I started using a facial brush to wash, and then the stippling brush right after that. Now it is my favourite time of night.

3) It’s ok to let your hair get ‘greasy’. So this goes to an extent. Like I said before about washing your face, your body has natural oils it produces to condition your skin, scalp and hair. These oils are not bad in regular amounts. The natural oils our scalps produce is actually what keeps our hair soft and scalp happy, so don’t be so quick to strip your hair of it every day. I can honestly say I go 3 days without washing my hair (but still showering and staying clean obviously) Have you ever noticed there’s always a golden time between your freshly washed hair, and when you need to wear a bun to hide the flop? I call that the happy hair period. It’s a perfect mix of natural oils and clean hair. Embrace it! Let your hair go the extra day without a wash, just wear a bun. I guarantee after you wash your hair it will feel soft and your scalp will be very happy too.

4) Last but not least: Admire yourself in the Mirror. I know, it feels we’ve been taught that you shouldn’t like things about yourself because it makes you vein…WRONG! It is totally healthy to like certain features of your body, or heck, your whole self for that matter! As long as you’re not doing anyone else harm, there’s nothing wrong with loving yourself. I challenge you to look in the mirror once every day and say something you like about yourself. Whether it be your little freckle on your nose or your whole figure. I urge you to say it and then smile. I’m not saying this will move mountains in terms of self-esteem but it will be a real pick-me-up every day. Whether you’re totally made up in your best makeup, or ‘au naturel’, I think this is an important habit to make 😊 It has taken me a darn long time to feel good or even proud of myself, and this is one thing that’s actually helped no matter how corny and cheesy it sounds.

Thank you for stopping by! Hope you’re having a wonderful week so far. Remember you can do it! ❤ Whatever it is :p

Food For Your Face

I’ve recently become more aware of the products I’m using on my skin, what they actually do, and where it comes from. Much like eating healthy and knowing where your food is from, the same goes for your skin care and what you put on your face.

While on this journey, I started loving making my own face masks. There is something so satisfying knowing all the ingredients in them, and what their benefits are.

Today I made my face mask focusing on what is nutritious for my skin.

IMG_1609IMG_1610

IMG_1605IMG_1607IMG_1606

To start I used…

White Clay Base:

This is excellent for clearing your skin of impurities and goes deep into your pores to extract dirt and oil. I love using white clay for an extra clean feel before finishing my nighttime routine.

Spirulina Algae:

You might know algae as that funny green stuff you find growing outside. However, when grown organically and USDA approved it does wonders for one’s skin. It is full of vitamins and it is particularly packed with detoxifying nutrients. Just don’t be scared of it’s funky smell and bright green colour.

Rose Petals:

I’m going to be honest, when I first saw rose petals as part of a face mask I thought it was just some hooey to make the face mask look prettier and sound nicer. In reality, rose petals contain wonderful oils that act as a moisturizer, helping even the dryest skin. On top of that the sugars they contain add a wonderful glow to your complexion. I have dried rose petals since they are much more convenient, but the fresher the ingredients the more nutritious it is to the skin.

Avocado Oil:

Plain and simple Avocado oil is a powerhouse for moisturizing and softening your skin. You don’t need much, just a couple drops will revitalize your complexion.

Tea Tree oil:

I’m sure by now everyone knows my raving reviews on Tea Tree oil, but I wouldn’t be so nutty about something if it didn’t work such wonders. I get bad acne on my chin (especially around that time of the month) and Tea Tree oil is the best acne treatment I have ever found. Because of its anti inflammatory qualities and warm soothing tingle, I love including it in my face masks, even store-bought ones.

This is what I call my Detoxifying Glow Mask! 🙂 there are so many yummy ingredients to choose from I can’t wait to share more amazing ones with you!

What’s inside?

I was so pleasantly surprised to see that the Lush pre packaging had a little makeover. Any soft items is are sealed in recyclable plastic, which stopped any wear or tear on them, which was one of my only pet peeves with ordering online.

Everything smells amazing in this box, and it’s truly a wonderful gift for anyone (including yourself 😜) It’s filled will all the classic Lush treats that we all know and love, as well as some new ones that will steal your heart!
